NYFW Hawaii 9.18.13

Suno, Cynthia Rowley, J. Crew, Michael Kors

Phew! I can exhale now because tropical prints are still a thing. Anything related to a humid climate with the combined scent of Plumeria and salt water has me longing for aloe, some sort of blue cocktail, sandy skin and board shorts…I LOVE board shorts!

But see, next spring will be different. Instead of graphic palm trees and waves; it’s going to be all about the vintage-inspired Hawaiian print. This may be a way of designers yearning to pay tribute to the unforgettable pipes (and fun button-down shirts) of Don Ho and even Elvis Presley. And because we won’t get to cover ourselves with these blooms for several months, it might be time to watch Blue Crush over and over again until the tide comes in.

NYFW VF 9.12.13

Maybe designers are simply looking for a new way to get their Vitamin C, but I’m noticing a color pattern this fashion week and I like it! From painterly floral dresses to coral-tinted smackers, this shade really does give me a surge of energy.

Now, I know what you’re thinking—orange is sooo resort, and spring 2014 seems so far away—but you can certainly start practicing now with a fuzzy sweater or a matte lipstick. Or perhaps, don a citrusy pump with indigo skinnies. Trust me: It’s okay to inject some color into those dark fall outfits.

Even though fall is looming, it sure doesn’t feel like it. I happen to think an Indian summer is in the cards, which means the hottest days are yet to come and afternoon BBQs with friends will carry into late September.

This is all fine by me, but I’m always faced with the dilemma of what to wear. Bikinis seem passé, while sweaters are unnecessary. Therefore, why not look to ʼ90s fashion inspiration? It invokes that special I-don’t-care-what-you-think, girlish charm. Round sunglasses, classic floral prints, jelly sandals and worn-in jeans just seem like the perfect staples for “now.”

Don’t you agree? I know Winona and Liv would.

Swim 7.31.13

Clockwise from left: Agua Bendita, Dolores Cortés, Minimale Animale, Beach Bunny, Suboo, Beach Riot

With a girls’ trip to Vegas on the horizon, I’ve been searching for a new poolside look. Call me a sucker for a flawless, expressive head-to-toe swim ensemble, but it’s inherent! I’m a Cali girl born and raised. Let’s just say impromptu accessorizing and cookie-cutter ensembles (think solid colors, straw sun hats and cork wedges) are big no-no’s for me.

After browsing the 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit photos and finding nothing suitable (pun intended), I looked elsewhere for inspiration. Enter: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in Miami. Rife with tanned and toned bombshells wearing little to nothing, the 2014 collections presented me with just what I was looking for—looks that were easy on the eyes, heavy on the prints, and finished with just the right amount of punk rock inspiration from the ʼ80s and ʼ90s.

You’ll notice a lot of hairspray and hair gel…well that my friends is just the icing on the innertube. So, without further ado, here is a recap of the looks that have floated to the top of my list.

Poolside patriotism was in full swing on Thursday, according to copywriter Valerie. While getting sun-and-water soaked at the W Hotel Westwood’s July 4th bash, Val sipped mojitos and snapped photos of some partygoers with stylish independent spirits:
