1. How did you get your start in fashion?
I went to FIT in NYC and did fashion internships while I was in school. I met the Seventeen fashion team at a fashion event I was covering for my internship and our Market editor asked me to do some real girl modeling for the magazine. I modeled for real girl stories in Seventeen throughout my Senior year of school and when it came time for graduation I submitted my resume for the fashion assistant position.
2. What advice do you give to girls who want break into the fashion industry?
If you want to break into fashion you have to intern like crazy. This business is a lot about experience, and contacts so while you’re interning you learn SO much and meet so many important people that can guide and mentor you. If fashion is something you want to do you have to be willing to jump right in, and work really hard to make a great impression!
3. What is the most surprising thing that has ever happened in your office?
I’m never really surprised about things that happen in our office. I’m lucky that I work at a magazine that is always getting major celeb visitors, tons of cool new products to try, and even performances from up and coming artists. I would say the most exciting thing was when Pharell came into the office. He popped by with Jermaine Dupri and with a new artist for a meeting. He stopped to use the men’s bathroom which is right next to the fashion dept. so he had to walk through all of our desks to get there and he even stopped to chat for a minute and took a picture!
4. What is an average day for you?
My average day changes all the time but for the most part I’m working in the fashion closet putting stories together and going through new samples for the season ahead. I usually start my day visiting designer showrooms and going to editor previews to see the newest collections and then I head back to the office to work on our Fashion pages.
5. What would people be surprised to learn about your day to day routine?
People would probably be surprised to learn that as an editor I’m not partying all the time at glamorous fashion parties. A lot of photos and blogs may show editors out at different events every night which is very true, but what people don’t know is that once I walk into an event I am there to see the products, I take pictures for my records at the office, and then usually 15 minutes later I’m out the door and on my way to the next one! It seems like I’m going to so many parties in one night but really I’m just there working and then popping into the next one!
6. What was your inspiration behind the design of your shoe “The Editor?”
I wear heels all the time so first and foremost I wanted it to be a comfortable shoe. I’m fan of booties no matter what the season, so I knew I wanted it to be a really cute bootie with a heel that appeared high, but wasn’t crazy high so that it was still comfortable. I love hardware and embellishments. The metal plates like the ones on the strap around the ankle of The Editor, are a big trend right now. I’m a huge fan of Pierre Hardy, Nicholas Kirkwood, and Charlotte Olympia who all do NOT shy away from fun colors in their designs. So I was really inspired to put a pop of color on the shoe in one of my favorite hues.
7. What inspires you and do you have any words you live by?
I’m inspired by New York City time and time again. It’s a place that so many people have a different story and all work really hard to achieve their goals. It’s not an easy city to make things happen, so the people that are here making their dreams come true have really put so much of themselves into making that happen. I try to surround myself by those people who are creative, smart, and think differently than me so I can continue to learn more all the time!
8. Why did you select the charity Myasthenia Gravis Foundation?
I chose the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation because Myasthenia is a disorder that I’ve been living with for the past 4 years. Once I was diagnosed I made it a goal that I’d use my resources and knowledge to raise as much awareness and funds as possibly to help find a cure. I joined the Outreach Committee about 6 months ago and wanted to bring something special to the table. It has been a really amazing journey so far and I’m so proud of the progress that we’ve made in such a short amount of time!
9. Fun fact about you?
I have a cooking club that meets monthly called “Chic Chef”. I wanted to start a club that could help to open up my circle of friends and meet new people in the city. We all have matching neon print aprons, and we have the best time catching up every month. It’s one of my favorite things that I do in my free time.
10. Heels or flats?
Heels!
11. Fashion Icon?
So many! It changes every season but I always come back to Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kate Moss, and some fashion editors that I have girl crushes on!
